Practice Notes

Improve the ability of the three forwards plus the attacking midfielder to pressure the ball collectively when the opponent builds up from the goalkeeper, with the goal to win it back directly, or to force a turnover.

Key words during the sessions are L-Run, Fake Open, 1v1, Pinch In.

Coach's Notes:

Play by the rules.

6v4 Build Up Game

Coach's Notes:

First 6–8 minutes: The goalkeeper always starts the play. Make sure players are in the correct positions before the goalkeeper restarts. No rush.

Shape: The four forwards start in a diamond when the goalkeeper starts the builds up.

Pressing triggers:

When the ball goes to a center back, the CF makes an L-Run: first get between the center backs, then pressure. Do not allow a switch.

Wingers Fake Open the outside back to invite the pass. Once it’s played, jump the outside back and force them backward, not forward.

Opposite winger Pinches in.

The #10 plays 1v1 with the opponents #6 and cuts off the pass.

Key words: L-Run, Fake Open, 1v1, Pinch In.

7v5 Game

Coach's Notes:

Same as above, but the two midfielders start 1v1 with the opponent’s midfielders.

Once the ball is played, the furthest midfielder (e.g., the 6) shifts ball-side and defends more zonally—stay close enough to intercept the pass to 8 or pressure the ball.

9v9 Game

Coach's Notes:

One team starts in a 1-4-3-1 formation, the other team in a 1-3-2-3 formation, whereby the central defender pushes into the midfield when the opposition start the buildup, creating a 1-2-3-3.

After 5 minutes of free play (no coaching), take two minutes to talk about the training topic; what is going well, what can be better.
