Defending the Box, Numbers Down
Defending the Box, Numbers Down
Set Up:
Two teams of six players set up in the attacking third, with the attackers starting at the cones and the defenders starting from the end line. To begin play, the GK passes out to any of the attackers, and the defenders come onto the field with the first touch. Each team gets three consecutive attacks - a 3v2, a 4v3, and then a 6v4. On goals or balls put out of play, the GK re-starts the drill with the next set of players. If the defenders win the ball, they can score in the two small goals set up outside of the penalty area.
After the three attacks, the teams switch sides. A running score is kept, and the team with the most goals after five rounds is the winner.
Coaching Points:
1. The goalkeeper must send defenders to the ball quickly and aggressively.
2. Shut down the passing lanes with a curved run, and force the attacker to play 1v1.
3. After your player passes off, drop straight back towards the center.
Progressions:
1. Another defender comes onto the field after the third pass is made.
