Finding the Third Man
Finding the Third Man
Combination Shuttle, Part 7
Player 1 passes up to Player 2 and runs forward. Player 2 plays it back to Player 3, who lays the ball off for Player 1. Player 1 passes up to Player 4, who re-starts in the pattern. Players 2 and 3 remain in the center as the others run back and forth.
-
The first pass up has to be hit with pace.
-
Watch the play develop in order to time your run correctly.
-
Call for the next pass before your teammate receives.
2v1, Three Times
The teams play 2v1 in all three zones. All players must stay inside of their own zones during play, but they can pass to any of their teammates. When a defender wins the ball, the other two defenders cross over into his zone to play 3v2.
-
Right after a combination, look for a pass out.
-
You need time to make the long pass to the other end zone.
-
Keep possession until you have a good chance to switch the ball.
3v2, Both Ways
The GK begins play with a pass to the 3rd attacker, coming on at midfield. The defenders must stay in their own half until the ball crosses over. Upon completion, the attackers go off and the two defenders stay on as a teammate comes on for the next 3v2.
-
Dribble down the middle and commit the first defender.
-
Look for the split pass between the two defenders.
-
Use combinations and be unpredictable.
7v7 Plus Three
The teams play 7v7 plus three on a full field. The defenders play in a 4-3 formation, and the attacking team can play with whatever formation they choose. When a goal is scored or a ball is put out of play, it is re-started by the GK.
-
Move the ball faster than the defenders can recover.
-
Anticipate turnovers and attack with superior numbers.
-
Keep possession until you have a good opportunity to go forward.
9v9, Free Play
Teams play on a field a bit smaller than a full field - penalty area width and one end line moved up to the edge of one penalty area. The length of the game is 30-40 minutes and play is continuous, meaning no stoppages by the coaching staff to instruct.
-
No stoppages in play for coaching.
