Organization:

Area: Penalty Area

Create a box of 16ft x 16ft with four different color cones.  The goalkeeper starts in the center of the box. The coach stands at eight yards from the box. The coach yells out a color.  The goalkeeper immediately touches that cone and returns to the center. At that moment the coach plays the ball in, and the goalkeeper must deal with it. Repeat this four, six or eight times.

Goal: Improve footwork speed, agility, movement efficiency, coordination, ability to change direction, stamina and overall athleticism.  Improve basic goalkeeping skills, such as passing and receiving (both feet), distribution, catching, falling and diving.

Movements:

Use a variety of agility drills, such as side-to-side shuffle, fast feet, sideways fast feet, hopscotch, One hop In and Out, 2-In, 1-Out, and so forth.

Focus Points:

  • Quick reaction and movement to cone and back to center.

  • Proper execution of technical goalkeeping skills, dealing with the ball.

Variations:

  • The coach volleys the ball to the goalkeeper for an overhand catch.

  • The coach passes the ball on the ground or higher next to the goalkeeper. The GK has to make a falling/diving save.

  • Increase the speed of the shot.

  • Decrease the time between actions to increase the physical demand of the activity.

Players Required:
