Goalkeeper training session demonstrating modern goalkeeper drills

10 Modern Goalkeeper Activities

By Rudy Pompert

The position of goalkeeper has evolved greatly over the last decades. The term goalkeeper almost feels outdated. Today’s keepers are true goalplayers. They must be excellent with their hands, but also with their feet. They must be confident soccer players.

These ten training activities cover several parts of a training session: the warmup, technical training, activities that train multiple skills in game-like situations, and full team training activities in which the goalkeeper plays a very important role and is constantly “game tested”. The following ten training activities are designed to reflect the modern demands of the goalplayer.

Warmup Activities

1. GK Dynamic Warmup with Ball

Warmup

In this warmup activity, the goalkeepers do not only go through the regular dynamic warmup routine; they immediately start working with the ball as well. By adding a ball, the goalkeepers build a connection with it right away. It also raises focus on the upcoming work from the very start.

2. Dynamic Warm Up #2

Warmup

By adding an agility ladder, the warmup becomes even more complete. The goalkeeper works with the ball while performing dynamic warmup movements and agility exercises at the same time. This improves speed, coordination, and focus. After this warmup, the goalkeepers are ready to take on the rest of the session.

Technique Activities

3. Technical Activity Box – Part 3

Technique

Repetition, repetition. The box setup ensures that the goalkeeper gets a turn every few seconds. When the group consists of four or more goalkeepers, they can also act as the feeder instead of the coach, passing, rolling, or throwing the ball to their fellow keeper. This adds extra focus and technical repetition of distribution skills.

4. Dealing with the Volley, Falling on the Ball

Technique

The box setup remains the same; however, a second action is added for the goalkeeper. After, for example, catching a volley to the face, the goalkeeper must attack a second rolled or thrown ball. To make it more realistic, another goalkeeper can apply light pressure.

Combined Technical Skills and Game Actions

5. GK Distribution, Shot, 1v1

Multi-Action

During a game, goalkeepers must perform several actions in quick succession. These multi-action activities are designed to train exactly that. After catching the ball, the goalkeeper immediately distributes it, followed by dealing with a shot. This realistic sequence is game-like and develops several key skills.

6. High Ball, Shot, Distribute #2

Multi-Action

In this multi-action activity, the goalkeepers first deal with a high ball or cross, followed by rolling the ball accurately to a shooter. After making the save, the goalkeeper again distributes the ball—this time with an overhand throw into an empty goal.

7. Through Ball Intercept

Multi-Action

In this activity, the goalkeeper must deal with a through ball and an incoming opponent. After intercepting the ball, the goalkeeper must distribute it accurately. This activity mirrors a game situation and develops key skills such as decision-making, footwork, positioning, running forward to intercept the ball, falling on the ball, distribution, and reaction speed.

The goalkeepers must also show courage under pressure from an incoming opponent.

8. 6v6, Playing the Cross

Team Activity

Team activities like these give goalkeepers the opportunity to develop multiple skills while gaining valuable game-like experience. They must approach these activities exactly as they would a game: play to win, constantly communicate with teammates, and perform every action with focus and intensity.

Coaches should demand this mindset while ensuring that the goalkeepers receive the specific coaching, attention, and feedback they need.

9. 6v3 Build Up Game

Team Activity

In this team build-up activity, the goalkeeper needs to be constantly involved, just like a field player. They must communicate clearly, demand the ball, receive the ball with the correct foot, open their body properly, pass accurately, and help the team maintain possession.

This activity develops confidence and composure in build-up play, helping the goalkeeper grow into a modern goalplayer.

10. 3v2 to 3v3

Small-Sided Game

This small-sided game demands a great deal from the goalkeepers. They must constantly switch between attacking and defensive mindsets, along with all the actions and skills that come with it: communication, distribution with hands and feet, dealing with shots, focus, fitness, and competitiveness.

It closely reflects the intensity and unpredictability of a real match, challenging the goalkeeper to stay switched on and involved at all times.
